The severe storm Hagibis knocked in Japan on Saturday. This storm has caused terrible destruction in Japan and has engulfed many people. More than 20 people have died due to this storm. Also, more than 100 people have been injured. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences on this storm. TYPHOON HAGIBIS
Hagibis is the nineteenth storm of the season, advancing north-northwestward into the Japanese mainland. It has stormed through Japan killing more than 25. It made landfall on Saturday at around 7 am local time (10:30 am IST), in Izu Peninsula, south-west of Tokyo.
The typhoon alert was issued on October 11 after which millions of the people were evacuated. It was predicted the rains would be two feet or 60 cm along with severe damaging winds. With a maximum wind speed of 240 kmph, this storm is currently the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane and even close to Category 5. Japan’s meteorological agency declared its highest warning level urging the residents of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures to find a secure building or move to higher floors.
The government alerted the people to stockpile necessities and brace for impact and even evacuate before the storm hits. Flights and train services were stopped which now has resumed, except for some regions. Several Rugby world cup matches and other events which were planned for Friday and the following days were cancelled. However, some fixtures have been given go-ahead as the storm has passed. Government has deployed some 27,000 troops and other emergency crews to rescue those stranded in flood-hit areas.
The thing which is called as unique about Hagibis by the weather experts is its rapid intensification. It is a different case altogether, which will be studied by the scientists even after the storm fades away.
