From the day the Amended Citizenship Act has passed, there have been several cases of protest in many states of India. Already the talks of the violent clash between the Jamia Milia Islamia students and the police has created a tension in the air, Delhi’s northeast area Seelampur-Jafrabad area has added fuel to the fire.

Around 1000 people gathered outside the DCP office on Tuesday to march against the amended CAA. The protest was peaceful in the beginning but took a violent turn all of sudden. Although the Nation News has accessed the video that showed people marching and shouting slogans such as ‘Hindu-Muslim Zindabad’ and ‘Jamia tum sangharsh karo, hum tumhare Saath Hain.’ It is still not clear at what point the peaceful march turned into an aggressive one. Angry protestors pelted policemen with pieces of bricks. The police got outnumbered and constantly used tear gas shelling to disperse the protestors that made breathing difficult.

Stone pelting on DTC buses and police officers and vandalization of properties has been reported in this area.

This has led the police to divert the vehicular movement in the area. 66 feet road from Seelampur to Jaffrabad (both carriageways) have been closed. Delhi traffic police twittered, “Traffic movement has been closed on 66 feet road from Seelampur to Jafrabad (both carriageways) due to demonstration.”

As many as seven metro stations- Seelampur on the Red Line and Welcome, Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Shiv Vihar, Johri Enclaveand Gokulpuri on the Pink Line –have been closed.

The metro stations have also been affected by the protestors. DMRC said on twitter, “Security Update Entry & exit gates of Welcome, Jaffrabad, and Maujpur-Babarpur are closed. Trains will not be halting at these stations,”.

The reports said that several policemen, including the senior officials, including ACP Gokulpuri and DCP RP Meena have been injured in the protests.

According to a senior police officer, the protests began around noon, and people gathered at T-point Seelampur. The protesters raised slogans against the CAA, NRC, and the government. The situation is under control, as said by Delhi police.

Delhi Police is taking the help of drones to keep the eagle’s eye in the Jafrabad area where the clash has broken police and the protestors. The protest against CAA is increasing day by day, revealing the anger in people.

Decision by Court

Earlier after hearing the allegations of police excesses on students protesting against the citizenship law at Jamia Millia Islamia University, the Supreme court said, the high court should be approached first.

The court also said if somebody commits any offense, the police are free to arrest, adding that the injured students should get medication. It further said, one inquiry cannot be ordered as incidents have occurred in many places. The court also asked how the buses were burnt during protests. The chief justice Bobde also asked the center as to why notices were not given to protesters before the arrest and whether medical assistance was given.
