One after the other, the states in India are getting out of BJP’s political map. The map has been reduced from 71% as it was in 2107 to 35% of the country’s landmass reducing the population governed by BJP from 69% to 43%, which is not a good sign for the current ruling party BJP. The hangover of losing elections in states like Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan was still not over, Jharkhand added fuel to the fire. And remember, this is just the beginning as elections in many states are still pending.

How the landmass area declined?

BJP was ruling in 7 states in 2014, which increased to 13 in 2015. 2016 saw another increase and the number reached 15, then with another hike, it increased to 19 in 2017. The maximum number was 21 in 2018. Then from breaking up an alliance to poorly performed era came, which led to their defeat in many states reducing the number of ruled states. But why this decline even after completing the promises like nullifying 370, criminalizing the act of Triple talaq and enacting CAA, the saffron party is constantly tasting the defeat. However, the Supreme Court verdict was also a booster for the party and was the hot topic of speech of many politicians favoring BJP.

Let us have a glance at the past

In 2014, Modi’s wave became an international sensation. This raised the expectations of people in India. Even the poor who never thought of voting came forward. The 2016 Indian Line of control strike added another quality to Modia’s character- courageous and made people see him as the only person to protect them from atrocities of Pakistan or terrorism. This over-boosted the confidence level of the Modi government and they started taking the public for granted. With time, it was also realized that Modi has come to power to create its history and introduced projects like Aadhar card, which ruined thousands of lives, leaving many starve to death. Then the most significant shock demonetization and implementation of GDP broke the common man’s back that shaken his trust in Modi. Also breaking up the alliance with many parties in many states and BJP’s open announcement to topple the JDS –Congress in Karnataka if it comes to power and many more such things gave a hint to the people that something is fishy inside.

Why did Modi win in 2019?

The most apparent reason for Modi to become PM in 2019 was there was no eligible candidate that could stand out Modi. People didn’t want to see others like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar, Mayawati to be the PM of India. This situation of ‘no other alternative left’ made BJP won by 303 seats in 2019 elections.

The vote power of the people of India

Till 2019, the Indians understood the intentions of BJP and then it was time to show their vote power. Opposition parties performed better, but BJP’s emerged as a single party losing more seats than in the last election. Although the BJP’s s alliance with rival Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) helped them in making government in Haryana, this trick doesn’t work in Madhya Pradesh. Imposing the President’s rule and assigning Devendra Fadnavis as CM and Ajit Pawar as Deputy CM themselves without informing other parties showed the real colour and intentions of BJP forcing the voters of other states to go against the Modi led BJP.

This dirty politics adversely affected the response for BJP in Jharkhand elections as for the first time since the state’s formation, the party didn’t emerge as the single largest party. The opposition alliance led by the Jharkhand Mukti Mocha now looks all set to form the next government with a comfortable majority. The vote share of BJP slumped from 55 percent in Jharkhand and 58 percent in Haryana in the Lok Sabha elections to 33% and 36% respectively after a few months of general elections only.

Conclusion

The people want Modi to be in the center due to ‘no options available’ factor, but they do not want it to enjoy the power of states as it will just add more arrogance and monopoly in the political environment of India, which the Indians are already witnessing.
