If your favorite movie is ‘Ye Jawani Hai Dewani’ and you think ‘Dev D’ is a cult movie, then there is one thing common between the two, and that is the actress Kalki Koechlin. You maybe have some doubts about how to pronounce her name, but there is no doubt that she has made her name under the list of successful actresses.
Kalki Koechlin is known for picking characters that are experimental and gives her space to explore more. She is also known for being fierce in voicing her opinions on trending topics for which she has to face brutal criticism. She has starred in movies like ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,’ ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots,’ ‘Margarita with a Straw,’ ‘Shaitan,’ ‘Gully Boy’ etc. The journey from Dev D to Gully Boy hasn’t been easy for the actress. Her performances have won her many applaud, and recognitions including a National Award, but the path wasn’t easy for her. Kalki has also starred in web series like Made in Heaven, Bhram, and Scared Games.
In a recent candid interview with a web portal, Kalki opened up about how her life has changed after her debut movie “Dev D’, how she had to wait after delivering a successful movie at the box office and how she is planning to raise her newborn.
Kalki opened up about how after starring in a movie alongside Abhay Deol and Mahie Gill had her dis-advantages because she got labeled as ‘Russian prostitute’ after the release. She stated, “I remember being upset after Dev D because there was one article that came out, and at that time, I was reading everything because it was my first film. That article was like, ‘They get all Russian prostitutes to work her in Bollywood’ and I was like, I am not Russian. Get your research right, at least.”
She mentioned that after her successful movie ‘Ye Jawani Hai Deewani,’ she spent around eight to nine months with no work. She revealed that after some time, she got a call from a producer but that never worked out because the producer wanted to go on a date with her, and she refused.
Kalki specified that things like these don’t just happen in Bollywood but in Hollywood too. Remembering one of her incidents, she mentioned that when she went to Hollywood, there was a day to asked her to come closer so that she can see the wrinkles around the actress’s eyes. Another guy she met asked her how old are she and the actress answered, ‘I am 30’, the guy said, ‘Oh, don’t worry, you still have 5 years left for your career.’ She also recalled some rude comments that she had to face both in the Indian film industry as well as in Hollywood.
But today, Kalki says that she has found a way to not read about the stuff written about her online or newspaper. She says that after some time, celebrities tend to grow a thicker skin, and that’s their superpower. The actress opened up about being sexually abused and opening up about the trauma to her therapist and later to her partner. She mentioned that she discussed the same during a conference that Rahul Bose organized.
Kalki Koechlin, who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Guy Hershberg, an Israeli classical pianist, was previously married to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap but the two separated in 2013. In September 2019, Kalki announced that she is pregnant with her first child with a due date in January 2020. She has zeroed in on a name that works for a baby of either gender, and that is representative of a gay person.
She opened up about how motherhood has changed her in terms of a human being. ‘The whole pregnancy for me has been so surreal, but it has played a number on my likes and dislikes”, Kalki stated. It is also reported that the actress has started to learn lullabies in another language to sing for her baby. She is involving herself in playing Ukulele. The actress wants to keep her child away from the limelight and have a normal life rather than that of a celebrity kid. Kalki is the first Bollywood actress who has opted for a water birth. Explaining what water birth is, it is the process of giving birth in a tub of warm water. Kalki says she loves water, and “the idea of relaxing in a warm pool is kinder both on the mother-to-be and the baby-to-be-born.” “If the mother is stress-free, the baby will also be born stress-free. What better can you ask for?” she says.
The actress was last seen in Netflix originals ‘Scared Games’ along with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, etc. She was also seen in Zee5’s Bhram and has been on a hiatus since her announcement of being pregnant. On the work front, the actress recently made her Tamil film debut with ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ and is currently prepping for a web series.
The Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actress recently shared a couple of pictures on her social media, where she is giving pregnancy goals to a lot of mothers out there. She looks gorgeous in a green floral print outfit as she’s seen flaunting her baby bump. She has posted the pictures with witty captions. While talking about her pregnancy, she did mention that she has raised questions because she is having a baby with her boyfriend and not husband. She is often asked that “Where is your husband?” or “How can you do this,” but Kalki stated that she has been in the best phase of her life during the pregnancy, and she has started to ignore all the stuff media or trolls write about her.
The one thing that Kalki Koechlin mentioned about her revealing the news of her child is the fact that Anurag Kashyap, Kalki’s ex-husband, was very welcoming and happy for her. She stated that Anurag welcomed her to parent’s club and asked her to reach out to him in any case she needs help with the baby. Not only Anurag, but the entire Bollywood fraternity has been very warm and welcoming towards the actress since she announced her pregnancy as they keep commenting heartfelt comments on her pictures as she is ready to deliver her baby any time soon now.
