For globetrotters, the world is brimming with spectacular locations. Some prefer to visit spiritual places, and some opt for destinations with vibrant nightlife and parties. Few others like to go on adventure trips! But a serene retreat in the lap of nature is something you can’t turn down.
Here’s a hidden treasure located on a peninsula of solid marble, bordering a remote glacial lake called General Carrera. The one-of-a-kind geological formation is known as “Marble Caves.” It sits in waters shared by Argentina and Chile.
A geological wonder.
Tucked away in the remote reaches of Patagonia, the Marble Caves are popularly known as Capillas de Mármol or Cuevas de Mármol. The 6000-year-old network of sculpted pillars, vaulted ceilings, and textured walls are the result of the tidal waves washing up against calcium carbonate of the cavern walls. The visitors are enamored by the spellbinding beauty of the interior and the labyrinth of intricate caves. After years of erosion, these geological formations have formed the Marble Cathedral, the Chapel and Nature’s Sanctuary.
· Marble Cathedral lies meters away from the shore and is only accessible by boat. The main chamber remains in shadow in the morning time, and the light that enters the cavern is reflected off the surface of the azure lake. The shape and sweep of waves play a significant role in changing the intensity and hues of water.
· Marble Chapel does not refer to a place of worship. They are the mineral formations constituted by calcium carbonate and deposited calcareous sediments. The chapels were declared Nature’s Sanctuary – one of the protection categories considered in the Chilean legislation over National Monuments. It encompasses a coastal area of 50 hectares, lined with dozens of other caves and formations.
Bathed in Blue.
As you float through these captivating caves, you’ll find a series of caves with cerulean display of blue when the water reflects the sunlight. From turquoise to sapphire and seafoam greens, the marble caves continually changes its appearance according to the seasons. In early spring, the shallow waters become turquoise, while in summers, the water turns into unearthly shade of blue due to high level of waves. The fluctuating colors of the sea are more than a mere play of the light. An additional feature is that the mineral impurities in the marble form a calligraphic impression of rose pink and robin’s egg blue across the walls.

Apart from exploring the breathtaking view of the magnificent caves, there is a myriad of exhilarating activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Boats and kayaks are available only a few inches away from the cathedral. You can take a thrilling ride while enjoying the beautiful sight of nature’s pristine art.
