According to research, one in 5 men and one in 6 women globally develop cancer in their lifetime and one in 8 men and one in 11 women die because of cancer. The number of cancer patients has increased by 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018.

The reason for increasing cancer patients can be population, aging or change and at some point the social and economic development.

Indraprastha Apollo hospital in Delhi launched the most advanced version of TomoTherapy Radixact X9 on Friday. This is the smartest radiation therapy to treat the most complicated cancer tumors.

Tomotherapy

It is a form of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) which let radiation pass slice by slice. The word has its origin from Greek prefix, Tomo means slice.

In this powerful and precise beams are produced to treat the inoperable tumors. One can also know the size and position of the tumor with the help of an inbuilt CT scan.

How is this technology helpful?

The unique 4D kV feature provides 4D volume images of moving tumors which help the radiologist to target them appropriately without harming the healthy tissues.

The higher degree of precision, speed, and accuracy has made Tomotherapy beneficial for cancer treatment. Due to rotational helical mechanism and less set-up time, patients find it comfortable to be treated with this technology. The Tomotherapy can treat cancer patients at any stage, especially multiple metastases. The best result has been seen in the treatment of bilateral breast cancer, pediatric oncology and all other forms of cancer.

The therapy is suggested to those patients who have reached an extreme level of dose.

Major areas of implementation

  • It can be used to decrease the symptoms of cancer in advance or later stage.
  • It can work as a primary treatment for cancer.
  • It can work in combination with other treatments.
  • Can be beneficial in shrinking down a tumor before surgery
  • To remove cancer cells, if any left after the cancer treatment.

As said Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, The research of this type of therapy is a remarkable development in the field of Radiation Oncology and will bring revolution in treating cancer. This system will let them deliver both fractionated radiotherapy as well as SBRT and Radiosurgery.

She further added the latest machine and team of experienced will help in precise and personalized care making the lives of cancer patients better and ensure better clinical results.

P Shivakumar, Managing Director, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said We are moving ahead with precision and excellence with revolutionary Radixaxt-X9: Tomotherapy, system powered by state-of-the-art 3D CT imaging. It uses a linear accelerator to deliver high-dose radiation to the tumor with sub-millimeter precision.

He further added that radio oncology has reached another level with the recent introduction of Radixact X9. This will be beneficial in the race of the effective and curative treatment of cancer. It will also help in targeting large filed at once, Without re-positioning, the machine can target 1.35 cms of length.
