Human Metapneumovirus Case Detected In Assam: 10-Month-Old Stable

Human metapneumovirus case has been confirmed in Assam, marking the first detection this season. A 10-month-old child tested positive for the virus after being admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh with cold-related symptoms. The child is reported to be stable, according to hospital officials.

AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan revealed that routine testing led to the detection of the virus. “The HMPV infection was confirmed after receiving test results from the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Lahowal. This is a common respiratory virus, and there is no cause for worry,” Bhuyan explained.

The infection was identified during standard influenza and flu-related screenings conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research. This case underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring during peak respiratory infection seasons.

Previous Cases Of Human Metapneumovirus In Assam

Since 2014, 110 cases of Human Metapneumovirus have been reported in the Dibrugarh district alone, according to ICMR-RMRC Senior Scientist Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty. “This is the first case detected this season. Such cases are observed annually, and there’s nothing unusual about this,” Dr. Borkakoty stated.

Human metapneumovirus typically emerges during winter and early spring, mirroring the seasonal trends of other respiratory infections. While it often presents with mild symptoms such as fever, cough, and congestion, it can occasionally lead to severe complications, particularly in infants and individuals with weakened immune systems.

What Is Human Metapneumovirus?

Human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus discovered in 2001 and closely related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It affects people of all age groups but is most prevalent in young children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, making hygiene practices essential for its prevention.

Globally, Human Metapneumovirus is recognized as a significant contributor to respiratory infections, though it often goes undiagnosed. Its symptoms overlap with other viral infections, making targeted testing crucial during seasonal outbreaks.

As health officials in Assam continue to monitor respiratory infections, they advise the public to maintain good hygiene and consult healthcare providers if symptoms persist. This vigilance will help mitigate the spread of Human Metapneumovirus and similar infections.
