A prisoner escapes Sabarmati Jail, triggering an extensive manhunt by Ahmedabad Police. The fugitive, Manuji Thakor, 36, who was serving a life sentence for murder, managed to escape during a hospital visit on January 10. The incident has raised serious concerns about security measures at one of Gujarat’s largest prisons.
According to an FIR filed by Group 2 jailer Babu Bhai Prajapati, Thakor, a resident of Patan, was escorted to the jail hospital at 4:45 pm by constable Pradyumn Singh Chauhan for treatment. However, by 5:30 pm, Thakor had not returned, and Chauhan, along with another officer, informed the jailer about his disappearance.
Following the escape, the jail authorities conducted an immediate headcount of the 14 inmates in the open jail, confirming that Thakor was missing. Extensive searches were carried out within the prison premises and nearby areas, but the efforts proved unsuccessful. The jailer promptly notified senior officials and lodged a complaint at Rakhial police station.
Ahmedabad Police have since intensified efforts to trace the fugitive. Teams are actively working on the case, reviewing CCTV footage from the jail and surrounding areas to identify any leads. A police officer stated, “We are coordinating with other agencies and have expanded our search to ensure Thakor is apprehended as soon as possible.”
Sabarmati Jail, known for housing high-profile inmates, has faced criticism in the past for security lapses. This incident adds to the series of challenges regarding prisoner management and safety protocols.
