Followig the brutal attack on the students and teachers of the Jawahar Lal Nehru University [JNU] by fifty to seventy masked goons within their campus. Right after the brutal attack, videos surfaced with men and even one woman masked with lathis, rods and acid bottles in their hands intimidating students of the university. Soon after protests emerged outside the main gate of the university, condemning the attacks and the inaction of the police and security forces who were allegedly present inside the university campus. As per a statement of the Registrar of the JNU, he termed it as a clash with the context of the ongoing JNU protest against the fee hike by the university administration. It was said that the left party people resisted the registration into the new winter session at the prescribed fee by the university administration.

In pursuance of the declaration adopted by trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC in September last year, they declared a nation-wide stroke on January 08, 2020. It was expected that around 25 crore people will join the strike in different parts of the country. The main reason behind a step as severe as a nation-wide strike was to express dissatisfaction towards what are alleged to be ‘anti-people’ policies by the ruling party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The participation in the strike was earlier limited to ten major central trade unions [CTUs] of the country but later spread across involving many sectoral independent federations and associations.

On Tuesday, 19 people, including student union president Aashi Ghosh, have been booked for the violence on Sunday at the JNU campus. Even after three days of violence, the Delhi Police has not been able to arrest anyone yet. Meanwhile, Hindu Raksha Dal leader Pinky Chaudhary has claimed responsibility for the attack. The crime branch team has reached JNU to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, eminent economist and JNU professor CP Chandrasekhar has resigned from his post in a government panel reviewing economic data due to the situation at the university.

Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal raised concerns against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) demonstrations and politicization in several universities in the country. He said at the Kolkata event on Sunday that the government would not tolerate making educational institutions a political hub under any circumstances. Everyone has the freedom to engage in political activities, but university and college should be kept away from it. Most of the students come here to study from far and distance.
