The Supreme Court on Friday rejected Nirbhaya case convict Vinay Sharma's plea challenging the rejection of his mercy petition by President Ram Nath Kovind.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday rejected the mercy petition of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case convict Mukesh Singh.

In order to evaluate the country's criminal justice system in the case of sexual offenses and rape, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Center, State Governments and Union Territories seeking answers. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. On Wednesday, the court also asked all the High Courts of the country to give details of the investigation, the process of gathering evidence and the facts related to the hearing of the case.

The Supreme Court has upheld the hanging of Nirbhaya gang rape and murder convict Akshay. The 3-member bench on Wednesday dismissed his petition. Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi expressed happiness over the decision. After this, the death warrant of the convicts was heard in Patiala House Court. The court directed Tihar Jail to issue a week's notice to the convicts today whether they want to file mercy petition or not. The court will next hear it on 7 January. However, Akshay's lawyer AP Singh has said to file a curative petition before the mercy petition.

Vinay Sharma, one of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape case, said that the mercy petition sent to the President should be withdrawn. Vinay said on Saturday that the petition was not signed by me. Vinay is the only convict in the case who had filed the mercy petition. According to officials, the Home Ministry has sent a recommendation to the President for a final decision on the mercy petition. Also, the Center has recommended rejection on the mercy petition.
