What do women-led protests mean today in India?

In the wake of anti-CAA protests spread across the country, the women have assumed the forefront in a rather unprecedented manner. The occupation and holding of the ground by women of Shaheen Bagh has been an inspiration for women across the country to leave their houses and be the loudest voice of resistance, the ruling party needs today. The narrow streets of Shaheen Bagh are filled with women raising their voices against a religion based discrimination attempt of the central government through the passing of the CAA and the decision to have a pan India NRC. It has been more than a month since these women have been teaching the rest of the country the true meaning of a peaceful protest. Their numbers and will are steel-strong, that they remain undisturbed by the local police.

GoondaRaj in Uttar Pradesh- The Defeaning Silence.

The violence and vandalism that perpetrated in Uttar Pradesh for the past few weeks are terrifying, to say the least. In the big state of Uttar Pradesh, with a Muslim majority population, the unjust treatment of the Muslims in the wake of anti-CAA protests reminds us of the Gujarat Riots in 2002. What runs common between Gujarat in 2002 and Uttar Pradesh in 2020 is the ruling dispensation headed by the Bhartiya Janta Party. Accounts from the state have been terrifying signaling towards a complete collapse of the rule of law in the state. The involvement of the administration in the violence and vandalism is no more hidden but more of an established fact. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, with a tainted history, came forward fearlessly to use words like ‘revenge’ from the protestors who have been involved in the vandalism of public property during the protests.

In a dirty blow to break the legitimacy of the protest, the BJP IT cell has released a video with a conversation between two people, pointing towards that the women protestors charge 500-700 rupees a day and Biryani for holding the ground. They allege the Indian National Congress for backing the protest financially. The men in the video together claim that “The landlords of the shops across the street (Shaheen Bagh) have waived off the rent for the shops. They said if the shops cannot function, how will they pay the rent? The ladies sitting in the area work in shifts. They are getting money according to their shifts.”

Soon after protests emerged outside the main gate of the university, condemning the attacks and the inaction of the police and security forces who were allegedly present inside the university campus. It was said that the left party people resisted the registration into the new winter session at the prescribed fee by the university administration.
