Indian Diaspora Train: Pravasi Bharatiya Express to Reconnect NRIs With Roots

The Indian diaspora train, Pravasi Bharatiya Express, is set to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 9, a significant date marking the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India in 1915. This state-of-the-art tourist train is designed to strengthen cultural ties with the Indian diaspora and is a key highlight of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Indian Diaspora Train: A Cultural Bridge

The Indian diaspora train is a three-week journey curated under the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana. Targeting the 45-65 age group, this initiative by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) aims to immerse passengers in India’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

With a capacity to accommodate 156 passengers, the train will visit iconic destinations such as Ayodhya, Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, Mahabalipuram, Rameswaram, Madurai, Kochi, Goa, Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), Ajmer, Pushkar, and Agra. These sites represent the heart of India’s religious, historical, and architectural richness.

Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA) at the Ministry of External Affairs, referred to the Indian diaspora as a “living bridge” between India and the countries they reside in. “The Pravasi Bharatiya Express is a unique opportunity for NRIs to reconnect with their roots and experience India’s diversity,” he said.

Diaspora’s Growing Importance

India boasts one of the largest diasporas globally, with over 35.4 million members, including 19.5 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 15.8 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). This community has emerged as a significant contributor to India’s economy through remittances and investments, strengthening India’s global standing.

The Indian diaspora train also brings attention to Odisha’s tourism potential, which remains largely untapped. Chatterjee highlighted the state’s cultural richness, calling it an essential addition to the diaspora’s rediscovery of India.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention and Exhibitions

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), aligns perfectly with the Indian diaspora train’s objectives. The convention will feature five plenary sessions covering key topics such as Youth Leadership, Women’s Leadership, and Sustainable Development.

Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate exhibitions showcasing India’s advancements, including technological innovation and cultural heritage. These exhibitions provide the diaspora with a comprehensive understanding of India’s progress while highlighting opportunities for collaboration.

Security Measures for the Event

To ensure the smooth execution of this high-profile event, security has been significantly ramped up in Bhubaneswar. Approximately 2,700 police personnel and 1,200 central forces will be deployed, ensuring the safety of attendees and seamless operations.

The Indian diaspora train and the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention mark a monumental initiative to connect NRIs with their homeland. This journey is not just about travel but about rediscovering identity, celebrating heritage, and fostering deeper connections between India and its global community.
