In a significant display of its stronghold in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee achieved a resounding victory in the panchayat elections. The party emerged triumphant by winning all 20 zilla parishads in the state, consolidating its dominance.

In the other two tiers of the panchayat system, the ruling TMC maintained an unbeatable position, securing nearly 80% (2,641 out of 3,317) of the gram panchayats and 92% (313 out of 341) of the panchayat samitis. These results were officially announced by the State Election Commission on Wednesday night.

The TMC’s comprehensive victory in the elections underscores its continued popularity and support among the electorate in West Bengal.

The TMC’s landslide victory was not limited to a specific region but spread across the state, encompassing areas ranging from South 24 Parganas in the south to Cooch Behar in the north. However, in the Hill districts of Kalimpong and Darjeeling, the TMC did not secure any seats. Nevertheless, its ally, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), emerged victorious, winning a majority of gram panchayats in both districts (30 out of 42 in Kalimpong and 38 out of 70 in Darjeeling).

Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC’s second-in-command, expressed his confidence on Tuesday that this “roaring mandate” would pave the way for the party’s performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections next year. The resounding victory in the elections has boosted the TMC’s prospects and provided momentum for their political campaign in the future.

Despite emerging as the primary opposition party in West Bengal by securing 77 seats in the 2021 state Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a setback in the elections. The party failed to secure any zilla parishad, which is the top tier of the three-tier panchayat system.

This outcome indicates that the BJP was unable to replicate its success in the Assembly elections at the grassroots level in the elections. It highlights the challenges the party faced in expanding its base and gaining support across all tiers of the panchayat system in West Bengal.

In terms of seats in zilla parishads, the TMC secured a significant majority by winning 880 out of the total 928 seats. On the other hand, the BJP managed to win only 31 seats, while the Congress and Left Front secured 13 and two seats, respectively.

Moving to the panchayat samitis, which is the second tier, the TMC achieved a massive victory by winning 313 samitis. In contrast, the BJP secured only seven seats. The Left Front won two seats, while the Congress failed to win any. Other parties, including Independents, managed to secure nine samiti seats. Additionally, there was a hung condition in 11 panchayat samitis.

These results clearly highlight the TMC’s overwhelming dominance in both zilla parishads and panchayat samitis, while the BJP faced limited success and the Congress and Left Front struggled to make significant gains.

In the gram panchayats, which represent the lowest tier in the system, the TMC secured a significant victory by winning 2,641 out of 3,317 gram Ps. The BJP also displayed a stronger performance compared to the higher tiers, securing 230 gram Ps. The Congress and Left Front managed to win 11 and 19 gram Ps, respectively. However, in 267 gram Ps, no single party emerged as the clear winner. Instead, others and independent candidates secured victory in 149 gram Ps.

These results demonstrate the TMC’s overwhelming success in the gram Ps, with the BJP making notable gains. The Congress and Left Front had limited success, and in a significant number of gram Ps, no single party emerged as the outright winner.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has emerged victorious in the majority of gram panchayats across various districts in West Bengal. The party’s success is evident in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, Dakshin Dinajpur, Paschim Medinipur, Cooch Behar, Jhargram, Alipurduar, Bankura, Jalpaiguri, and Murshidabad.

In these districts, the TMC secured a significant majority of gram panchayats. For instance, in Murshidabad, which witnessed instances of violence, the TMC won 221 out of 250 gram panchayats. Similarly, in other districts like Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Purba Bardhaman, the TMC emerged victorious in the majority of gram panchayats.

These results underscore the TMC’s strong performance and widespread support in several districts of West Bengal, as it secured a majority of gram panchayats in these areas.

In the district of Malda, which was previously considered a stronghold of the Congress party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured victory in 59 out of the 146 gram panchayats. However, the TMC fell short of a majority in the district. Additionally, 64 gram panchayats remained undecided, indicating a level of uncertainty in the election outcome.

It is noteworthy that Malda experienced significant instances of violence during the election process. The unsettled status of a considerable number of gram panchayats further adds to the complex and fluid political situation in the district.

The results in Malda highlight the TMC’s efforts to make inroads into areas previously dominated by other parties, including the Congress. The undecided gram panchayats suggest that the political landscape in Malda remains dynamic, with the potential for further shifts in the future.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) displayed its strongest performance in the Purba Medinipur district, securing victory in 61 out of the total 223 gram panchayats. This district holds significance as it is the home district of Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

In the neighboring district of Nadia, the BJP also made noteworthy gains by winning 44 out of the total 185 gram panchayats.

These results indicate the BJP’s increasing influence and support in these districts, particularly in Purba Medinipur, which holds significance due to its association with a prominent opposition leader. The BJP’s performance in these areas showcases its growing presence and the ability to make electoral gains in West Bengal.

The gram panchayat results indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a setback in the Junglemahal and north Bengal regions of West Bengal. These regions were previously considered strongholds for the party, especially after its impressive performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it won 18 seats in the state.

The outcome of the elections reflects a decline in the BJP’s support and influence in these regions. The party’s loss of ground suggests a shift in the political dynamics and voter preferences since the Lok Sabha polls.

The panchayat elections, which took place on July 8, witnessed a significant voter turnout of 80.71 percent, with voting conducted across more than 61,000 booths in West Bengal.
