Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who recently met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, continued his efforts to strengthen Opposition unity by calling on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting aimed to forge a unified front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This marked the second such meeting between Kharge and Kumar within a span of one and a half months.
The meeting took place at the residence of Congress President at 10, Rajaji Marg and was attended by Congress General aSecretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and JD(U) Chief Lalan Singh.

Emphasizing the significance of the occasion, Venugopal expressed confidence that a gathering of a “vast majority” of non-BJP parties would take place in the near future. An opposition parties’ meeting will be held soon. We will announce the date and venue within 1-2 days. A vast number of parties will participate in the meeting,” Venugopal stated after the meeting.
Kharge also took to Twitter earlier, stating, “Now the country will be united. The strength of democracy is our message! Mr. @RahulGandhi and I discussed the current political situation with the Chief Minister of Bihar @NitishKumar today and took forward the process of giving a new direction to the country.”
According to sources cited by news agency PTI, the meeting focused on developing a roadmap to strengthen Opposition unity and the possibility of convening a gathering of Opposition leaders in Patna.
The previous day, Kumar and Kejriwal had jointly called for opposition unity to counter the BJP. The JD(U) leader visited the residence of the AAP convenor and extended his “complete support” in the ongoing standoff with the Centre over control of administrative services.
Notably, Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav of Bihar, Chief Minister Hemant Soren of Jharkhand, President of the Nationalist Congress Party Sharad Pawar, Chief Minister MK Stalin of Tamil Nadu, and President of the National Conference Farooq Abdullah attended the swearing-in ceremony of Siddaramaiah as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Saturday, demonstrating a show of opposition unity.
Kumar has been engaging with Opposition leaders and regional satraps as part of the ongoing efforts to foster unity, although the specific form and structure of the unified front are yet to be determined.
