Expressing his joy, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “I am delighted that the symbol of India’s great tradition, Sengol, will be installed in the new Parliament building. This revered sceptre will serve as a constant reminder that we must uphold our responsibilities and remain accountable to the people we serve.”

The Sengol, a magnificent five-feet-long sceptre made of silver and gold, holds historical significance. According to the government, it was originally handed over by Lord Mountbatten to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14, 1947, symbolizing the transfer of power. However, the Congress party dismisses this version as “bogus.” The Sengol, representing governance in ancient Tamil kingdoms, was meticulously crafted by renowned jewellers Vummidi Bangaru Chetty of Madras (now Chennai). For many years, it was on display at The Allahabad Museum.

Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the significance of the Sengol and lamented its previous treatment. He stated, “It would have been fitting if the holy Sengol had received its due respect after independence and been accorded an honorable position. Instead, it was displayed as a mere walking stick in Anand Bhawan, Prayagraj. It is our government’s responsibility, as your humble servant, to restore the Sengol’s dignity and bring it out of Anand Bhawan.”
