I appeal to the government to work towards resolving this issue promptly.”
Madan Lal further commented on the unusual participation of political parties in the wrestlers’ protest, stating, “What I find peculiar is that this is a protest by wrestlers, yet political parties are getting involved. I fail to comprehend this. I believe it would be better for the wrestlers to address the matter directly with the government. When political parties intervene, it transforms into a political issue.”
These remarks from Madan Lal followed a statement issued by members of the 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team, expressing their support for the protesting wrestlers. The cricketers expressed their distress and concern after witnessing the disturbing visuals of the wrestlers being manhandled. “We are distressed and disturbed by the unfortunate scenes of our champion wrestlers being manhandled. We are also deeply concerned about reports of them considering discarding their hard-earned medals into the River Ganga,” read the joint statement released by the former cricketers.
“These medals represent years of dedication, sacrifice, determination, and resilience, not only for the wrestlers themselves but also for the pride and joy of our nation. We implore them not to rush into any decisions and sincerely hope that their concerns are swiftly addressed and resolved. Let the law of the land prevail,” the statement continued.
However, BCCI President Roger Binny distanced himself from the statement, clarifying that he had not endorsed it. Binny emphasized that the competent authorities were actively working towards resolving the issue and expressed his belief that sports should remain separate from politics.
Contrary to media reports, I would like to clarify that I have not issued any statement regarding the ongoing wrestlers’ protest. I trust that the relevant authorities are diligently working towards resolving the matter. As a former cricketer, I firmly believe in keeping sports and politics distinct,” Binny affirmed.
According to a PTI report, Kirti Azad, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and currently affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, sought the approval of Kapil Dev and Madan Lal before releasing the joint statement. Other members of the iconic 1983 batch include renowned cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, K. Srikanth, Syed Kirmani, Yashpal Sharma, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, and Sandeep Patil.
