A win for the democracy
The political overtone of what happened in Maharashtra in the last few days has somewhere left the win for democracy unacknowledged. After a sly oath-taking ceremony based on baseless letters of support, the majoritarian government once again tried to assert power where it was not due. Since the news broke of Fadnavis assuming power at the State, there were a lot of questions raised on the constitutional norms and values of the Indian democracy. What followed was rather unprecedented. In times when the faith in the judiciary seems diminishing, the Supreme Court did come forward and order for a floor test within 24 hours, after hearing the matter. The said decision of the court did build pressure on the BJP, claiming false numbers of support for the formation of the government. However, late, the judgment was pronounced; it did bag a win for democracy.
The entire political rollout has set a precedent that power does not and will not play over principals. It was the constitutional values and norms of the democracy which came in to save the failing democracy. Towards an end of the political melodrama which played in the State of Maharashtra, the takeaway is that politics over principle is a no-no in the country. With much mud being thrown at the Supreme Court for passing decisions favouring the Bhartiya Janta Party [BJP], the cycle seems to be broken.
The results of the political results suggest that the Modi wave is dying a slow death in the country. The map is throwing off the orange spread on it by the RSS-BJP. After what was said, a dismayed performance of democracy after the abrogation of Article 370 revoking the special status Kashmir, this brings in the hope that values are still left in the country. The Modi wave has taken the country by a storm, with an imperative Har-Ghar-Modi campaign. For the good or the bad, is to be decided later but what we see today might be the beginning of an end for the Modi government. In the recent state assembly elections held in Haryana and Maharashtra, the chances of a returning BJP government has been grim. After the results were announced, both Haryana and Maharashtra became tough nuts to crack for the Modi-led BJP government. With help from the Jannayak Janta Party [JJP], the BJP managed to form a government in Haryana. But what awaited in Maharashtra could not have been foreseen. It got tricked into the politics by NCP, with Ajit Pawar changing sides and embarrassing the biggest national party in the country. With elections approaching in Jharkhand and New Delhi, is this a setback for the BJP, or will the trumpet continue to blow? The desperation of the BJP very gracefully turned into embarrassment which will prove to be harmful and may impact its assessment in the state assembly elections scheduled to be held next.
Will the BJP rise again or is this the beginning of the end? It is for time to say.
